Many of you may remember how sought after the 1909 V.D.B. Pennies were when you were a youngster. Well, they still are today! The reason is simple, this was a unique "One-Year-Only-Issue" that was obviously distinctive from all later dates of Lincoln Wheat Cents. A Collector Favorite! This is what collectors love... coins that are different, unique, rare, hard-to-find... coins that they can show off to their friends, coins that other people don't have. Here's the history of how the famous 1909 V.D.B. Penny came to be so highly desirable: • In 1909, the U.S. Mint first issued a new Penny honoring President Lincoln. It replaced the Indian Head Cents used since 1859. The obverse featured a portrait of Lincoln and the reverse was a simple design bearing two heads of wheat surrounding the words ONE CENT. • This U.S. coin broke all tradition by placing the image of an actual person on a coin made for circulation. This alone created a lot of controversy. • The new Cent was created by sculptor famous for bronze portraits by the name of Victor David Brenner. He took the liberty of putting his initials V.D.B. in large letters at the base of the reverse. • After the coin was released, there was a storm of protest over his conspicuous V.D.B. initials. Many collectors felt they detracted from the design. In response, mint officials halted 1909 minting in mid-run and eliminated the V.D.B. initials entirely. Collectors Crave Hard-To-Find Coins The end result was to create the lower mintage V.D.B. 1909 "One-Year-Only" Pennies while all other 1909 to 1958 issues had no initials on the reverse. As always, it was this uniqueness, rarity, and distinctive look of the V.D.B. initials that inspired us when we were kids to search for hours on end through bags of pocket change. Back then, finding those tough dates was a real thrill to us. Today, we feel the same way! A Strictly Limited Find In fact, V.D.B. Cents are still nowhere to be found in most collections!
