Before you build a significant collection of ancient coins, let us share with you some advice that could save you time, effort, and money in the long run.
TWO PROBLEMS WITH ANCIENT COINS
Up until a few years ago the Austin Coin Collecting Society seldom offered any ancient coins. We felt there were some significant problems with 2,000 year old coins, problems that needed to be solved permanently.
1. Lots of Ancient Junk - At the top of this page we've shown you an example of an ancient Athenian Owl that is typically offered by dealers. This coin is worn down, the Owl is almost indiscernible, and frankly it's just common junk that was probably cleaned somewhere in the past using abrasive Comet cleanser.
2. The Problem of Authenticity - Fake counterfet ancient coins are all too commonly traded on auction sites to unsuspecting consumers. Until we could sell ancients that were backed by a GENUINE certification, by a leading grading service, we were not comfortable offering these coins. Believe me, decades from now, you don't want to get stuck with a lot of expensive fake coins you can't sell because they are counterfit.
THE SOLUTIONS
Thankfully, these two problems have been completely resolved to our satisfaction in recent years. A few significant and well documented archaelogical finds of ancient coins have come to light. Because the exact location and origin of the coins could be identified, we became more and more comfortable with anicent coins. In the last year, we are gradually being given the first pick from ancient releases due to our status as one of America's major rare coin dealers.
Our Buyers are Snobs
When our ancient coin buyers look at ancient collections they are picky, very picky. Let's face it, they are snobs. They turn down many, many ancient coins that simply don't meet our strict standards. They are convinced that cheap coins that look awful are no bargain regardless of how inexpensive they are.
Backing of Major Grading Services
Secondly, in recent years the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) has added ancient coin graders and experts in the field to their team. They have agreed to authenticate certain ancient coins whose origin can be documented. In a few cases, they have graded the coins with physical descriptions as there are no numeric grading standards for ancient coins.
NGC certifies the authenticity of ancient coins by putting a description of each coin, a date range when minted, and the word "GENUINE" on the certificate that is sealed inside each NGC holder.
An 18-Year History in the Business
Only when the Austin Coin Collecting Society receives coins that meet this critieria, do we feel 100% comfortable offering them as a "Rare Coin Collectible" to our Preferred Collectors.
We take great pride in our 18 year history of serving collectors with high quality coins and great service. You can depend on us. Buying coins from strangers, unknown auction sellers, and individauls over the internet can be a risky proposition not worth the trouble.
Moneyback Guarantee
No two ancient coins ever look alike. Because they were hand-struck, usually by slaves, they will vary in diameter, thickness, and quality of the strike which was made with a hammer on ancient coin dies.
We are so sure of the quality and so dedicated to your enjoyment of the coin collecting hobby that we back every ancient coin we sell with a 14 Day Moneyback Guarantee.
From the time you receive you order, you have 14 days to decide if you are 100% happy with your coins. If, for any reason, you don't want to keep your coins, please return them to us. We will promptly refund your money, the shipping charges you paid, and the cost to send the coins back to us by insured mail.
A Rock Solid, Triple Moneyback Guarantee
If you can get the same Triple Moneyback Guarantee from a company that's been incorporated for 18 years and has 82,000 Preferred Collectors on its records, then (and only then) should you feel comfortable buying ancient coins elsewhere.
If you have any other questions about ancient coins, please call us at 1-800-928-6468. Ancient Coin Specialists are available 9am till 5pm Monday through Friday.
